[ARCHIVED] Residents Asked to Report Landfill Odors

State environmental officials are asking people to report landfill odors to help determine why complaints have been on the rise recently.

Town leaders have received more text messages, phone calls and emails during the past week or so about odor. Complaints have come from several neighborhoods in the general vicinity of the landfill and also from Holly Springs Towne Center shopping center.

The county-owned South Wake Landfill is off N.C. 55 Bypass, just outside Holly Springs town limits.

The N.C. Division of Waste Management is working with the county landfill staff to track wind direction and odors day-to-day. Odors can vary significantly from hour to hour because of specific waste types, operational procedures, weather conditions, etc.

A consulting engineering firm has presented an odor management strategy for the landfill and is testing an odor misting system.

State officials ask those reporting landfill odors to keep a logbook over seven to 10 days. The results will help determine the location, intensity and duration of odors.
