[ARCHIVED] Flashing Beacons Added at Grigsby Crosswalk

See flashing lights on Grigsby? Look for a pedestrian in the crosswalk.

In an effort to alert motorists to pedestrians crossing the road, the Town of Holly Springs has installed flashing beacons at a crosswalk on Grigsby Avenue near Womble Park. The solar-powered rectangular beacons flash rapidly when a pedestrian pushes a button.

“We added the beacons at this particular intersection because it’s near Womble Park and on the main road to Sugg Farm, at a sharp curve on a road where people often drive too fast,” said Project Engineer Dirk Siebenbrodt.

The Town plans to seek funding to install similar beacons at other crosswalks.

Although State law requires drivers to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, pedestrians should not begin crossing the road until vehicles have stopped for them.

"These flashing beacons are not traffic control devices like stoplights but rather advanced additional safety features," said Siebenbrodt.

Siebenbrodt said Federal Highway Administration studies haves shown that this type of beacon improves the rate at which drivers yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Because the units are solar powered, they will continue working during outages. The devices will allow for activation throughout the day, including during early morning and evening hours for commuter trail users.
