The Bass Lake Road bridge is scheduled to close May 11 so that the state Department of Transportation can replace the deteriorating structure. Traffic will be unable to cross for about six months.
NCDOT will detour through traffic along Holly Springs Road and Sunset Lake Road throughout the project. N.C. 55 can be an alternate detour for some motorists. However, Bass Lake Road will remain open to local traffic on either side of the bridge.
Drivers still will be able to turn into Bass Lake Park and onto streets such as Salem Ridge Road from the Holly Springs side of the bridge.
However, Bass Lake Road as a connection to Fuquay-Varina will be lost temporarily while NCDOT's contractor installs the new bridge. The work is expected to take about six months.
The recently-completed trail around Bass Lake will remain open during work, although some temporary closures are possible.
NCDOT says the bridge was built in 1954 and that it is structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Replacement has been planned since at least 2008.
The Bass Lake Road bridge has a sufficiency rating of 6 out of a possible 100 for a new structure meeting current engineering standards, the state says. It is among the lowest rating bridges in the county.
