[ARCHIVED] Town Facilities Open at Noon Tuesday

Updated Tuesday, 12:45 p.m.

Holly Springs town offices and parks and recreation facilities are open this afternoon until 5 p.m.. Tuesday night's Town Council meeting has been canceled.

Wake County Public Schools are closed Tuesday.

Town parks and recreation programs and classes mirror Wake County Public Schools on weather closings and delays.

However, parks and recreation facilities will be open Tuesday afternoon for those who have other reasons for visiting.

Waste Industries is closed Tuesday because of icy roads. It will re-evaluate conditions Wednesday morning to decide whether service can resume on a delay and how the schedule will change.

Road clearing equipment was placed ahead of the storm in known trouble spots such as hills to ensure availability, Public Works Director Luncie McNeil said Monday afternoon.

"As soon as the ice begins, they'll be laying down a layer of sand and salt on hills and bridges," he said. "They will be working through the night."

A second shift of Public Works crew members will be ready to take over Tuesday morning.

McNeil urged people to stay off the roads after the icy weather starts so that road clearing crew members can do their job.

Holly Springs police also urged residents to avoid any unnecessary travel during and immediately after the storm. Those who must drive should watch for road-clearing crews, police said. Allow more distance for slowing or stopping in traffic.

In addition to the Town Council meeting, other Feb. 17 cancellations include an open house that was for address changes related to the Main Street extension project. The Planning and Zoning Department will reschedule.
