[ARCHIVED] Parks and recreation facilities close 6 p.m. Monday

The Feb. 17 Town Council meeting has been canceled in anticipation of icy conditions on Tuesday.

All town parks and recreation facilities closed Monday at 6 p.m. Decisions are expected Monday night about any schedule changes Tuesday for town offices and for parks and recreation facilities.

Town parks and recreation programs and classes mirror Wake County Public Schools on weather closings and delays. Schools closed early Monday. The school system has made no announcement yet about Tuesday.

Road clearing equipment has been placed ahead of the storm in known trouble spots such as hills to ensure availability, Public Works Director Luncie McNeil said Monday afternoon.

"As soon as the ice begins, they'll be laying down a layer of sand and salt on hills and bridges," he said. "They will be working through the night."

A second shift of Public Works crew members will be ready to take over Tuesday morning.

McNeil urged people to stay off the roads after the icy weather starts so that road clearing crew members can do their job.

Holly Springs police also urged residents to avoid any unnecessary travel during and immediately after the storm. Those who must travel should watch for road-clearing crews, police said. Allow more distance for slowing or stopping in traffic.
