[ARCHIVED] Free play on Womble Park turf begins at 8 a.m. every weekday

Come out and play! As warmer weather approaches and spring soccer programs begin, the synthetic turf fields at Womble Park are open for free play beginning at 8 a.m. weekdays.

“We want to provide as much play time as we can for residents, particularly children who may be tracked out of school or out for the summer,” said Adam Huffman, assistant director of the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Previously, the Womble Park synthetic turf fields had been open any time an employee was available to monitor them. The more than $1 million synthetic turf and subsurface drainage can be damaged by dogs, bicycles, sports drinks, food, gum, and tobacco products, all of which are prohibited on the fields.

Now, recently activated cameras feeding live video of the fields allow employees to monitor action on the turf from the Hunt Center front desk and other locations. An on-site employee will be at the fields during times of peak use.

“We've always wanted to provide as much open play as possible while protecting the taxpayers' investment,” Huffman said.

So, come on out! Unless the fields are in use by Town of Holly Springs Parks and Recreation programs or rented, they’re available on a first come, first serve basis. (Organized teams and large groups must rent a field prior to using it.) The fields are open Monday through Friday, beginning at 8 a.m. Closing times and weekend hours will vary, depending on Town Parks and Recreation programs and rentals, which may keep portions the fields open for free play later than regular staff hours. The synthetic turf at Womble Park is only one of the facilities open to the public for free play. Natural turf fields open to the public are located adjacent to the Hunt Center and behind Rex Healthcare. Several local school fields are available for public use when they’re not being used by the schools, Town Parks and Recreation programs or rentals. Those include fields at Holly Springs Elementary, Holly Ridge Elementary and Holly Grove Middle, as well as the multipurpose field at Holly Springs High School.
