[ARCHIVED] Public Works Crews Prepare for Icy Roads

Public Works crews have trucks ready with sand and salt in case roads turn icy Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

"We're prepared as best we can be," Public Works Director Luncie McNeil said, adding that equipment checks and the gathering of supplies began months ago.

A wintry mix of rain, freezing rain and possibly was forecast for Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

All Parks and Recreation programs and classes are cancelled Tuesday evening, starting at 5:30 p.m. However, track-out and after school programs will continue until 6 p.m., allowing parents to arrive at the usual time.

Hunt Recreation Center and Womble Park synthetic turf field will close at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Wake County Public Schools has cancelled its games and after-school activities Tuesday night.

Town Parks and Recreation programs follow the school system's schedule on cancellations. Decisions on facility hours and on rentals are handled independently.

Waste Industries' collection of garbage and recyclables will be delayed by 2 hours Wednesday morning.

Public Works trucks with a plow attached to the front and a salt and sand spreader on the back are on hand along with a motor grader, McNeil said. Late Tuesday morning, crews began filling the trucks with a 3-to1 mixture of sand plus salt.
