[ARCHIVED] Grease Down the Drain Could Bring a Plumber to Your Door

FOG logo

Disposing of cooking oil and grease properly rather than pouring it down the drain could lessen the need to extend an emergency invitation to a plumber this holiday season.

‘Tis the season to cook. So the town of Holly Springs reminds homeowners that grease rinsed down the drain is a recipe for clogged pipes and sewer backups.

Here are better, more environmentally friendly ways to dispose of cooking fat, oil and grease:

• Pour used cooking oil back in the container and take it to the household hazardous waste drop-off at the South Wake Landfill at 6130 Old Smithfield Road for recycling.

• Wipe or scrape food particles and grease into the trash can before rinsing plates or putting them in the dishwasher. Don’t use the garbage disposal as a trash can since food wastes can attach to grease buildup inside sewer pipes.

More information on keeping your pipes and town sewer lines clear is available through Holly Springs’ fats, oil and grease control program. Take advantage of free giveaways including can lids, fat trapper bags, pan scrapers, and foldable funnels.
