[ARCHIVED] NCDOT Signal Timing Work Under Way on N.C. 55

Periodic daytime lane closures are possible on N.C. 55 for several weeks as workers synchronize traffic lights to try to improve vehicle flow.

The construction will occur only between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., the state Department of Transportation says. The signal timing effort is directed at the intersections of Avent Ferry Road and Ballentine Street / Green Oaks Parkway.

The NCDOT-ordered work should wrap up by mid-October.

The project involves installing cable to “hard-wire” connections between signal lights at the intersections. The state says that will require road shoulder closures and could mean lane closings as well.

The signal timing is supposed to occur by radio waves. The developer of Holly Springs Towne Center installed that system as part of road work along N.C. 55 near the shopping center. But the radio wave method isn’t working well enough. Hard-wiring connections should correct the problem.

For more information or to report work occurring outside the 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. window, contact the Holly Springs Engineering Department at (919) 557-3938 or

Meanwhile the Town and NCDOT have joined forces on a much bigger project to alleviate congestion at N.C. 55 and Avent Ferry Road. It will involve new lanes and medians and signal light changes that could be in place by the end of next year. Surveying and design are under way.

The main purpose of the intersection reconfiguration will be to speed left turns from Avent Ferry Road during the morning and right turns onto it in the afternoon. The state is paying for two-thirds of the $1.6 million project, with the Town responsible for the remaining cost.

A third effort to alleviate traffic congestion in the vicinity involves extending Main Street westward across N.C. 55. Engineers expect that project to significantly reduce the amount of traffic turning left onto N.C. 55 from Avent Ferry Road.
