Saturday's Park-It in the Market, the first food truck rodeo at the Holly Springs farmers market, exceeded all expectations, and the Town plans to invite the food truck vendors back in response to residents who are saying, "Please do it again!"
"Our first food truck rodeo was a huge success, and it was so much fun," said Laura Holloman, planner with the Town Planning & Zoning Department, which operates the farmers market. "We learned a lot about how to manage a food truck rodeo, as it was our first time holding one. We're going to take what we learned and improve on the event. We're already talking about our next rodeo."
Whether the next food truck rodeo with the Holly Springs farmers market will be later this season or next year will depend on food truck availability and market logistics. The rodeo would need to fit into a tight farmers market schedule with events already planned throughout the rest of the market season, which runs through October 11, the day of the annual Chili Cook-Off. Next season, Holloman said the market will hold multiple food truck rodeos.
Last Saturday, eight food trucks were part of Park-It in the Market. Live music and free activities for children, a regular feature at the market, added to the event, which attracted about 1,600 people.
"While that's a great turnout, some vendors may not have been expecting the crowds and sold out," Holloman said.
The food truck rodeo was part of the farmers market, which is open in downtown Holly Springs every Saturday, May through mid-October, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the parking lot across from Town Hall on Main Street.
The farmers market is funded by sponsorships and donations only, including the market's 2014 blue ribbon sponsor, GMA Supply. Because the market relies on sponsors and donations, advertising money is limited. While farmers market staff is planning the next food truck rodeo, drop by the market any Saturday. Market vendors sell a wide variety of produce, all-natural meats and artisan foods to last you throughout the entire week. Additionally, many market vendors sell ready-to-eat farm stand treats including baklava, gluten-free muffins, homemade premium ice cream, roasted nuts, popcorn and more.
