[ARCHIVED] Farmers Market Opens Season Saturday, May 3

The Holly Springs Farmers Market reopens Saturday, May 3 for an eighth season of fresh produce and an expanding variety of locally-made food favorites.

The season opener will kick off with a ribbon-cutting at 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot across Main Street from Town Hall. Route 55 Jazz Band will begin performing at 10:30.

Holly Springs’ Fire-Rescue Department will share fire prevention information and teach basic hands-only CPR. Police officers will also be on hand with displays on May 3.

The Farmers Market has come a long way since it opened in 2006 to become a favorite family-friendly event in Holly Springs.

“We truly appreciate the generous support of our sponsors, vendors, and the Holly Springs community,” said Shelia Stanton, market coordinator.

From a handful of farmers, the market has grown to include meats and seafood and a variety of baked goods and prepared foods, including a gluten free baked goods.

Other offerings include local roasted coffee, homemade ice cream, popcorn, nuts; a variety of jams and jellies, mustard, pickles, sauces, even homemade dog treats.

The season’s 60 events include live music and kid-friendly activities each week, plus monthly cooking demonstrations and gardening tips, and much more. Repeat customer and customer appreciation prizes will be awarded during the season.

One of the season’s earliest special events will be a free document shredding service on May 31 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The season ends Oct. 11 with the annual Chili Cook-off.

In 2013, Holly Springs’ market was among the top 25 most celebrated farmers markets in the nation.

Holly Springs’ Department of Planning and Zoning operates the market.
