A Motorcycle Poker Run starting and ending in Holly Springs today and sponsored by the America’s Guardians motorcycle club attracted 110 riders and raised more than $2,500 for the War on Terror memorial in Veterans Park in Holly Springs.

Riders included Chewy the Biker Dog (pictured) and his driver, Butch Ewing of Harnett County.

The 70-mile Saturday morning ride attracted riders from three states, all eager to support local teen David Griffith who is building the monument to honor all who have died in service to their country on and after Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial serves as David's Eagle Scout project, and those who died include David’s big brother, United States Marine Corps Major Sam Griffith who died in action in Afghanistan in 2011. The War on Terror memorial will be dedicated on June 14, Flag Day and Sam’s 39th birthday.

Saturday's event was close to the hearts of the motorcycle clubs that participated as most members are former or current military or law enforcement personnel. Jerry “Saint” Read of Raleigh is president of the local Americas Guardians chapter who organized the event.
