[ARCHIVED] Firefighters Recommend Smoke Alarm Batteries

Holly Springs firefighters advise residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors with the switch to Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, March 9.

We’ll lose an hour of sleep when the time changes from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. early Sunday. Firefighters use the twice yearly time switch as a safety reminder to lessen the chances of catastrophic loss.

To stay safe, replacing batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should be done at least once a year. Timing replacement with the time change makes it easier to remember when to switch out batteries.

Replace batteries right away if you hear the “chirping” sound that alarms make when the battery is low. Test smoke alarms monthly to ensure they’re operating correctly.

The Holly Springs Fire Department offers free smoke detector checks.

Request an inspection by calling the Neighborhood Safety Hotline at (919) 577-SAFE (7233). A Fire Department staff member will call you back to schedule a smoke detector check when it’s convenient for you.

Firefighters can provide a new battery for homes that have an alarm, but need a fresh battery. They can provide a new smoke alarm to a home that does not have at least one functioning alarm.
