Main roads in Holly Springs are passable, although slick spots remain. Holly Springs Public Works snow plowing crews have moved into subdivisions to clear as many of those streets as possible.
However, residents are asked to remain off roads today if at all possible today. Conditions will worsen tonight as temperatures fall well below freezing.
Public Works employees have worked as long as 25 hours straight to try to clear the roads. However, they were unable to begin plowing in earnest until 7 o'clock Wednesday night because rapidly worsening conditions had left roads clogged with vehicles.
Police estimated there were at least 15-20 traffic accidents, although no serious injuries were reported. Officers reported 161 abandoned vehicles and about two dozen stranded motorists.
Public Works will resume work before dawn Friday, spreading sand and salt to deal with black ice.
