[ARCHIVED] Town Moves Forward with All-Sports Stadium

Town leaders have endorsed plans for an 1,800-seat stadium on North Main Street that would be home to a new Holly Springs team in a college baseball summer league. Most usage would be for Town recreational leagues, including soccer and youth football.

The stadium will be part of the 42-acre North Main Athletic Complex, which will be built to accommodate baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, football and lacrosse, plus other sports and special events.

Tennis courts and two lighted, synthetic turf soccer fields comprise the first phase of the athletic complex, which will be built on property that the Town is acquiring from Wake County.

Recently, the Town Council endorsed an arrangement with the Coastal Plain League, a summer league for college baseball players with teams in the Carolinas and Virginia.

Holly Springs would have its own team in the league, which already is headquartered here. The as-yet unnamed team is slated to begin play in the new stadium in 2015.

Without Coastal Plain League investment, the stadium would not be built. The Town will
have use of the stadium three-fourths of the time. The Parks and Recreation Department will use the stadium’s lighted, synthetic turf field for activities such as baseball, softball, football, soccer and lacrosse.

“This project gives us a rare opportunity to address some of the recreation needs in our community and also to benefit economic development,” said Interim Town Manager Charles Simmons.

Town leaders envision the $5.5 million stadium as a community gathering place that could be used for concerts and other special events in addition to sports.

Town officials say the complex will bring more money-spending visitors to Holly Springs while giving our residents more in-town entertainment options.

Also at North Main Athletic Complex, the Town will build two synthetic turf soccer fields, eight regular-sized tennis courts and four kid-sized courts in the first phase of the athletic complex. A gymnasium may follow down the road.

The site is southwest of Trellis Pointe Apartments.
