The Holly Springs Utley Creek Water Reclamation Facility is permitted to treat up to 6.0 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater. As of July 2019, the average amount treated is approximately 2.6 MGD. Future upgrades will allow the facility to discharge up to 8 MGD into Utley Creek.
The facility is manned 24 hours per day and uses the activated sludge treatment process that also removes biological nutrients, including phosphorus and nitrogen, protecting downstream waterways. The treated effluent discharges into Utley Creek in the Cape Fear River Basin.
