Cleanup Under Way at Abandoned Trash Dump

State-supervised cleanup is under way at a long-abandoned, privately-owned garbage dump off Bass Lake Road. Completion is expected in early fall 2018.

The dump, which was in use from the 1950's until the 1970's, is across the road from the Logan’s Manor development. It preceded the state and federal rules that govern landfill siting and operation.

The N.C. Division of Waste Management said that only surface waste including tires and appliances are being removed. The work will include a stabilized soil cover that will be graded to promote “positive stormwater runoff,” the agency said.

The disposal area will have a non-woody, vegetative cover in perpetuity.

The town of Holly Springs never owned or operated the dump. However, the Engineering Department has kept abreast of cleanup plans since the site is in the Gable Ridge drainage basin, an area of known drainage issues. The state hired a third-party engineer to verify that drainage issues would not be worsened.
