As work continues to widen W. Holly Springs Road between Main Street and N.C. 55, a new median is being installed. Holly Springs Road has been slated to become a four-lane, median-divided thoroughfare since the early 2000s.
While the median was listed on the original approved construction plans in 2010 for a childcare facility, as well as with the Holly Springs Professional Park developed a few years later, many customers of these businesses and residents who live along the road have enjoyed a full access road for years and were not aware of these long-range plans.
As construction has begun on the median, there has been confusion about how people can enter and exit homes and businesses along W. Holly Springs Road.
The Town of Holly Springs has some suggested routes for drivers along the road:
To enter the childcare facility, Holly Springs Professional Park, and nearby homes if you are traveling westbound on W. Holly Springs Road or coming from downtown Holly Springs:
In the short term, to enter the childcare facility from westbound W. Holly Springs Road, turn right onto the bypass, make a u-turn, head south on the bypass 700 feet, and make an immediate left back onto W. Holly Springs Road eastbound. Then turn right onto Earnie Lane.
Take Ballentine Street to the bypass, go north on the bypass, make a right onto W. Holly Springs Road, and then turn right onto Earnie Lane.
Take Main Street to the bypass, travel north on the bypass, make a right onto W. Holly Springs Road, then turn right onto Earnie Lane.
To exit the childcare facility, Holly Springs Professional Park, and nearby homes:
Today, the Town of Holly Springs consulted with NCDOT to allow drivers to make a legal U-turn at Inglesham Drive. Starting at the end of next week, residents and patrons of the childcare center and Professional Park can turn right out of Earnie Lane and then make a legal U-turn at Inglesham Drive to travel westbound on W. Holly Springs Road. Until that time, drivers will only be allowed to travel eastbound on W. Holly Springs Road to Main Street. Also, starting in 2020, drivers on Main Street will be able to use Sportsmanship Way to access the bypass.
- In the early 2000s, the Town of Holly Springs Comprehensive Transportation Plan was approved. It included the long-range plan to turn W. Holly Springs Road into a four lane, median divided thoroughfare.
- As development has continued over the last twenty years, road improvements have occurred to bring that plan to reality.
- Until now, a median did not exist on W. Holly Springs Road, but as part of the approved plan, it is currently being constructed as development continues.
