Ting Spotlight Vendor of the Week

  1. DukeEnergyLogo4cweb

This week's Duke Progress Energy Spotlight Vendor is South Chestnut Farm!

Roger started South Chestnut Farm in Chatham County on land that has been in his family for at least four generations. Inspired by stories of successful small farms from across the country, he envisioned an opportunity to manage a 60 acre cattle farm in a sustainable and environmentally-sound manner while producing farm products for local customers.

Today, South Chestnut places top priority on the health of their soil and grasses to produce eggs from pastured laying hens and 100% certified grass-fed beef from a small herd of Dexter cows. They use no growth hormones, no antibiotics, no pesticides and no synthetic fertilizers on any of their land. We practice “managed rotational grazing” to ensure our pastures are never over grazed, are properly stocked and kept fertile by an ever-increasing amount of organic matter.

To place guidelines on themselves and to earn the confidence of customers, they have earned certification from Animal Welfare Approved for the humane treatment of their animals, along with grass-fed certification for their beef from A Greener World.

    This week's Ting Internet
Spotlight Vendor is McLean Farms!  They are a local nursery located in NW Harnett County. They operate as a seasonal nursery with annual flowers & seasonal produce. Stephen takes pride in growing local produce and know the importance of knowing where your food comes from! They work hard to produce quality vegetables and fruits.

    1) How did you get into farming, and how long have you done it?
Farming has been part of our family for generations. I began farming with my grandfather as soon as I could walk. I spent many days and summers helping on our family farm, tobacco was our main crop. My grandfather retired from farming in the early 2000's & I began working with my father growing our landscaping and construction business. I decided to start a small nursery around 2010 and each year we have added flowers and crops to our farm. We started out with three small greenhouses and have grown from that, two acres of strawberries, several acres of produce, and over 25 acres of corn. We have been excited to watch our farm come back to life, and enjoy showing our boys the value of hardwork, as we hope one day they will continue McLean Farms. We recently have lost the namesake of our farm, my grandfather, we are now, more than ever determined to keep our farm alive and well in his honor.

    2) What’s your favorite thing to make with your produce?
When we have time to sit down and eat :), we love anything that is made with our strawberries, wether it's eating them straight out of the bucket or making a strawberry dessert. We also love to grill our vegetables in the summer & nothing says summertime like cutting a watermelon with family after dinner.

    3) What do you do for fun in your free time?
Outside of work & farming, I am also the Assistant Chief at Northwest Harnett Fire Department, I have been with this department for 18 years & love everything about the firefighting service. I enjoy coaching our boys in baseball and basketball, and love spending time outdoors hunting and fishing.
